U13 Boys SFAI SUBWAY National Cup Round 1

Ballynanty Rovers 6-1 Askeaton/Kilcornan
Josh O’Donoghue
The U13 boys came up against a very strong Ballynanty A side in the first round of the National Cup on Saturday afternoon. We were a little unlucky to find ourselves 2-0 down after 15 minutes to a couple of scrappy goals, but after that two good quality moves from Ballynanty meant we went into the break 4-0 down. We continued to battle hard in the second half but the quality of the opposition was just a little too much for us. We never gave up though, and were rewarded with a goal late on from Josh O’Donoghue to finish the game 6-1. The team didn’t let their heads drop throughout, and every one of the players, including all the substitutes who came on and helped the team, can be very proud of their performance.

U12 Girls Div 1
Abbeyfeale Utd A 3-3 Askeaton/Kilcornan
Kate O’Driscoll (2)
Aimee Quirke
The U12 girls played out a hard-fought 3-3 draw away to Abbeyfeale on Saturday morning. After a pretty even start Abbeyfeale got on top for the last 15 minutes of the first half, and deserved the 1-0 halftime lead they had. We changed our setup a little at half-time and, despite going 2-0 down early in the second half, the girls dug in and battled back to level things at 2-2 through two quick-fire goals from Kate O’Driscoll. A few minutes later Kate was brought down on the edge of the box and Aimee Quirke dispatched it to put us 3-2 up with just over 10 minutes to go. Kate had another goal disallowed for offside before Abbeyfeale equalised with a deflected shot from outside the box with just a few minutes to go. It was a cruel end to the game for the girls who were disappointed not to hold on for the win but every one of the players, including all the substitutes who came on and helped the team, can be very proud of the spirit they showed to fight back from 2-0 down. If they keep that up for the rest of the season then they will be hard to beat.

U16 Girls Div 2
Askeaton/Kilcornan 0-5 Breska Rovers
On Saturday afternoon, we found ourselves 4-0 down at half-time, no complaints, Breska were really playing well.
That said, we did create several chances in the first half, which showed we could get in behind them. At half-time, we had a bit of a chat, and things definitely improved in the second half. We were winning more tackles, avoided giving the ball away in dangerous positions, and our defence was a lot tighter.
We only conceded once more, from a corner that caught us at the near post. Again, we created a few good chances but just didn’t have the luck in front of goal.
Credit to Breska, they played some really good football. But it took us until the second half to really get at them, and we definitely made things harder for them after the break.
We wish a speedy recovery to Caoimhe, who went off injured just before the end of the match.
A great turnout today. Special mention to Mya, who was absolutely brilliant in goals.
Now, we move on to the next game, where, as always, we’ll give it another go!
