Sean Whelan 1’ (Assist Stephen Smith)
John McCarthy 24’ (Assist Stephen Smith)
Stephen Smith 56’
Evan Costello 74’
Colm O’ Flaherty 86’ (Assist Sam Duggan)
Askeaton/Kilcornan triumphed 5-0 over near neighbours Shannonside in a commanding display of football, with a dominant first-half performance that set the tone for the rest of the match. The game, played in good conditions, kicked off at 1:30pm, with the home side quickly asserting dominance.
The match could not have started better for us, as we took the lead within the first minute. Sean Whelan found the back of the net with a well-taken goal, assisted by Stephen Smith. The early strike set the stage for what was to come, and we continued to press.
On the 24th minute, a second goal arrived. John McCarthy was the scorer, once again benefiting from an assist by Stephen. The 2-0 scoreline at the break gave us a comfortable lead heading into the second half.
Changes came early in the second half, with Evan Costello replacing Diarmuid O’Connor on the 54th minute. Just two minutes later, on the 56th minute, Stephen scored his own goal, expertly converting a free kick to extend the lead to 3-0.
We made further changes as the match wore on, with Thomas McCarthy replacing Stephen on the 65th minute. On the 70th minute, Conor McNamara and Colm O’Flaherty came on for Tomás Sheahan and Sean Whelan, respectively.
The substitutions proved effective, as Evan added a fourth goal on the 74th minute, finishing off a well-worked move. Finally, Colm put the icing on the cake, scoring the fifth and final goal in the 86th minute to cap off a dominant performance.
Shannonside struggled to break down our defense and could not find a way past our resolute backline. The 5-0 scoreline was a fair reflection of our control throughout the game.
